CPD Continuing Professional Development

Many of our conferences, workshops and other events fulfill accreditation requirements of various bodies. For example, many of our conferences for the legal community satisfy yearly continuing professional development (CPD) credits. In addition, many of our programs are accredited by various accrediting bodies such as the Human Resource Professionals Association (HRPA).

Alberta

Reporting Date: 1 year (March 16 – March 15)
Provincial Requirements: In Alberta, all active lawyers must create and declare an annual written or electronic Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Plan. There is no minimum CPD hours requirement. On demand programming is accepted. The CPD Plan period is 1 year – March 16 to March 15. Lawyers may use resources at Law Society of Alberta CPD or any other format of their choosing to create their CPD Plan. They must then make a declaration, between January 1 and March 15, that their CPD Plan has been made.

British Columbia

Reporting Date: 1 year (January 1 – December 31)
Provincial Requirements: The Law Society requires that, each calendar year, all practising BC lawyers complete and report completion online of at least 12 hours of continuing professional development (CPD) in accredited educational activities. At least two of the 12 hours must pertain to any combination of professional responsibility and ethics, client care and relations, or practice management.

Manitoba

Reporting Date: (January 1 – December 31)
Provincial Requirements: Lawyers in Manitoba are required to complete one hour of eligible Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities for each month in the calendar year that they maintained active practicing status. If a lawyer maintained active practicing status for three or more months in the calendar year, one and a half (1.5 hours) of the total CPD hours required must relate to ethics, professional responsibility or practice management. Newly called lawyers will report their eligible CPD activities for their first full year of practice, for example, if called to the bar in June of 2012, the first report will be for the 2013 calendar year.

New Brunswick

Reporting Date: 1 year (January 1 – December 31)
Provincial Requirements: All practicing members of the Society must complete and report at least 12 approved MCPD hours by December 31 each year. Lawyers may claim up to 2 credits each year for self study. The Society recommends that each member complete 50 hours of self study each year.

Newfoundland and Labrador

Reporting Date: 1 year (January 1 – December 31)
Provincial Requirements: Beginning in 2016, the Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador will require all practicing members to complete a minimum of 15 hours of eligible CLE activities annually. The submission deadline for filing in a given year will likely be the end of January of the following year.

Northwest Territories

Reporting Date: 1 year (April 1 – March 31)
Provincial Requirements: Members are required to complete a minimum of twelve (12) hours of CPD activity, including a minimum of two (2) hours focused on Legal Ethics & Professional Responsibility, during each membership year (April 1^st to March 31^st).

Nova Scotia

Reporting Date: 1 year (June 1 – May 31)
Provincial Requirements: All practicing lawyers are required to complete 12 hours of continuing professional development (CPD) annually, and to report this education in their CPD Log, which forms part of their Annual Lawyer Reports. The deadline for reporting your hours is May 31 of each year.

Nunavut

Reporting Date: 1 year (January 31 – January 30)
Provincial Requirements: All active members of the Law Society of Nunavut are required to complete a minimum of 12 hours of CPD annually, including at least 1 hour devoted to professional responsibility and ethics.

Ontario

Reporting Date: 1 year (January 1 – December 31)
Provincial Requirements: Lawyers and paralegals who are practicing law or providing legal services must complete in each calendar year at least 12 CPD Hours in Eligible Educational Activities consisting of a minimum of 3 Professionalism Hours on topics related to professional responsibility, ethics and/or practice management and up to 9 Substantive Hours per year. Lawyers and paralegals must report their CPD Hours using the online LSUC Portal by December 31 of each calendar year.

Prince Edward Island

Reporting Date: 2 years (July 1, 2015 – June 30, 2017)
Provincial Requirements: The minimum CPD requirements is the completion of twenty-four (24) hours of CPD Activities in the current two year term.

Quebec

Reporting Date: 2 years (April 1, 2015 – March 31, 2017)
Provincial Requirements: 30 hours per compliance period. No specific training content is set by the Comité. However, the content must be related to the legal practice. The Barreau du Quebec automatically recognizes the same number of hours that have been accredited by another law society subject to MCLE.

Saskatchewan

Reporting Date: 2 years (January 1, 2013 – December 31, 2015)
Provincial Requirements: 36 hours per reporting period. Not less than 6 hours (of the required 36) must pertain to any one or any combination of the following topics: professional responsibility; ethics; practice standards; the code of professional conduct; conflict of interest; rules of the law society; client care and relations; practice management.

Yukon

Reporting Date: 1 year (January 1 – December 31)
Provincial Requirements: In Yukon, all practicing lawyers are required to complete 12 hours of professional development annually. Mandatory content, such as ethics/professional responsibility, do not form part of Yukon’s CPD requirements. The Law Society of Yukon does not accredit providers or subject matter, but will have the discretion to determine that activities offered by a specific provider are not eligible activities if they do not adequately meet the activities set out in the Guidelines for Eligible CPD Activities. On demand programming is accepted. CPD reporting is done once a year on Form 13 (Annual Declaration).
