The National Energy Board (NEB) wants detailed information from energy companies in order to assess “the unique aspects” of future hydraulic fracturing activities in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. The Filing Requirements for Onshore Drilling Operations Involving Hydraulic Fracturing (NE23-175/2013E) sets out the information applicants must now submit with an application for an Operating Authorization (OA) issued under the Canada Oil and Gas Operations Act. In order to conduct its environmental assessment of proposals, the NEB requires information on project development, potential impacts to the environment, potential impacts from accidents and malfunctions, consultation with Aboriginal groups and the public, socio-economic impacts arising from environmental impacts and mitigation measures used to protect the environment. [Read More…]  

Shale gas company loses drilling license near Gros Morne park, posted on Canadian Manufacturing

An oil exploration company says it will lose its license next month to drill wells near Gros Morne National Park in western Newfoundland. CEO Mark Jarvis of Shoal Point Energy Ltd. says the company’s bid to extend one of three exploration licenses it holds in the province was rejected Dec. 5 by the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board. In a statement, Jarvis says the decision means his company will lose its license as of Jan. 15 as well as a $1-million deposit made last January for a one-year extension on drilling exploration wells. [Read More…]  

Encana to raise gas liquids output by 30 pct, posted on MSN Money

Encana Corp, Canada’s largest natural gas producer, will boost liquids production by 30 percent in 2014 as it moves to execute a plan from its new chief executive to concentrate spending on regions rich in high-value gas liquids and oil. The company said on Wednesday it will focus three-quarters of its planned 2014 capital spending of $2.4 billion to $2.5 billion on five shale regions in Western Canada and the U.S. South and Southwest. [Read More…]
