Vancouver activist calls upon feds to consult with women’s groups about indigenous-women’s inquiry

The cochair of the February 14th Women’s Memorial March committee has criticized the federal government’s consultation process in advance of a high-profile inquiry. Speaking at a news conference before today’s event in Vancouver, Fay Blaney said that her group is “still pressing for women’s groups to be heard” regarding the commission into missing and murdered indigenous women and girls.

Supreme Court will hear appeal on Line 9 pipeline

A Federal Court of Appeal dismissed an appeal of the National Energy Board’s approval for Enbridge to reverse the flow of the controversial Line 9 pipeline. However, the Supreme Cout of Canada has granted a First Nations group leave to appeal the decision of the lower court.

A Canadian indigenous law expert says First Nations self-government is long overdue and will benefit both the Crown and indigenous people in this country.

Liberals face heat from NDP, tories in Ottawa for aboriginal rights approach

A session in the House of Commons on Wednesday saw criticism from both the New Democrats and the Tories against the Liberal party for their approach to aboriginal rights, as the Vancouver Sun reports. The Vancouver-based newspaper reported that the Liberal’s campaign promise to deal with aboriginal rights and title issues wasn’t well received in parliament.
