Fresh Perspectives on Longstanding Challenges

First Nations are striving to improve their on-reserve communities for current and future generations, but limited financial resources have made this a difficult endeavour. From homes and waste-treatment facilities, to energy supplies and roads – they are tasked with financing the design, engineering and construction of infrastructure and maintaining every building, home and system.

Building on previous initiatives, the federal government is providing funding support in Budget 2017 to Indigenous populations for green infrastructure; climate adaptation; infrastructure planning and emergency management; renewable energy projects; road access; Internet connectivity; and energy systems.

Yet beyond government assistance, the future of living on reserve requires unique approaches to finance infrastructure expansion. Respected stakeholders are collaborating on creative funding models, rethinking paths to home ownership and modernizing construction in remote regions of the country.
